Pop Design

Pop Design is all about fun, new materials, experimentation with plastics and new technologies. There is a change, the more the product is fun, the more it is appealing. This led to Radical design in the 1970’s.

A pop designer Eero Aarnio designed the Ball chair. This chair was done by using one of the simplest geometric form, the ball. Cutting of a part of it and fixing it at one point. With this cut he came out with remarkable results. It has a cozy and calm atmosphere, protecting outside noises and giving a private space for relaxing time or read a book. It also has a function aspect, it turns around on its own axis from the base. In my outlook this is a very beautiful chair with a simple and clean design that makes you feel comfortable and in private. This chair it is only used for reading or making a phone call. I cannot imagine someone watching a movie in it or worse use it as a dining chair. It is more of a decorative product.

The Panton chair is in a form of an S shape. One of the first plastic chair ever created, by Verner Panton, this also gives a similar look to the Selene chair. Except this chair has a very beautiful shape and different from the original chairs. Panton produced a cold-pressed model using polyester strengthened with fibreglass. For the first time, an entire chair had been designed in one piece, without any legs. It became known as a free-swinger. In my opinion it is an amazing chair from top to bottom with the design, the colours and the material used. It is very attractive chair for any occasion it can be also put anywhere, just choose the right colour to match the room.

Another product of Verner Panton is this furniture called the Pantower or else the Living Tower. Panton always had a way for fashion and interiors. The furniture can be divided into four seats of varying heights, and opens up a multitude of new seating. Living Tower is a cuboid shape with natural curves that the user can benefit for squatting, climbing, crouching, or lying down. In my opinion it was a great design in those days but for today it looks more for kids to climb and play on it. It does not look very comfortable to stay on it for a long time. Also I doubt it how stable it is for people to climb or change positions.

Pantower

In my opinion Pop design was a very interesting and fun era, where one could design anything he wanted by simply draw flowing lines on a drawing book and he will have a fun design to build. It was not the era of serious and laws of design.
